A. Marijuana is decriminalized or officially tolerated in Amsterdam. A person is allowed to carry up to 5 grams. Above that one can be subject to legal penalties.
Q. How strong is the marijuana in Amsterdam?
A. Studies place the average strength of Dutch cannabis at between 15 and 20 percent THC.
Q. What is the strongest strain of marijuana in the world in terms of THC content?
A. Individual and groups of marijuana plants will vary in THC content based on factors such as genetics, growing and harvesting conditions. G-13, from which G-13 Haze is derived, is said to produce a THC content of about 25 percent. White Russian and AK-47 also can consistently top 20 percent THC under the right conditions.
Q. Are cocaine, LSD and other “hard drugs” legal in Amsterdam?
A. No. Cocaine and LSD, as well as other drugs such as ecstasy and amphetamines, are classified as “hard drugs” and are thus strictly forbidden in the city. “Magic mushrooms” were made illegal in late 2008. While some may argue that such a designation is arbitrary or unfair, that’s what the politicians have decided in Amsterdam.
Q. Is Amsterdam safe?
A. Yes, Amsterdam is fairly safe. In all major cities there is crime, and Amsterdam is no exception. While visiting Amsterdam one must be cautious and use judgment. It is not recommended to walk alone late at night around the city, and especially not to leave valuables unattended.
Q. What’s the best time of the year to go to Amsterdam?
A. During the spring and summer the weather is best, but the prices for plane tickets and hotel rooms then will be at their peak. During the winter, tourist season is slow, which means prices will be cheap. So you will have to weigh the pros and cons of each season.
